Highlights of Bill Million's rise to his current position included
working as an assistant trainer for Phil Hauswald from 1985 until the spring of 1989.
Bill was the primary caretaker of Demons Begone, the favorite for the 1987 Kentucky Derby.
He also had Epitome under his care in New York the summer before she won the Breeders Cup
Juvenile Fillies and became 2 Year Old Filly Champion. Bill remembers, "Phil allowed me
the freedom to train as I saw fit. I'm grateful for the confidence he
had in me."
Later in the fall of 1989 Bill went to work as assistant trainer for Gary
Hartlage, and was with Gary until he took out his trainer's license in the
spring of 1994. "In the fall of 1989 while I was an assistant with Gary
we were tied for leading trainer at Churchill Downs, and won three stakes
at Churchill one spring meet." Bill worked with Gary when they claimed
Judge T.C., who now stands at stud in Kentucky for $20,000.
Bill didn't grow up on the race track as many trainers did, he is
the son of a career Air Force officer. Bill graduated with a degree in broadcasting from
Eastern Kentucky University before embarking on the path that led him
to train thoroughbred race horses.
The first horse Bill ran in his own name finished second in an allowance race
at Keeneland, beaten a neck. His name was RECOILED, and he came back to
win at Keeneland in his very next start. Later that year he finished
third in the Gallant Fox in New York, a Grade III race. RECOILED was owned by Ronald
Kirk of Lexington, Bill's first owner. Other owners have included Double A Stable
(Al Senn and A.B. Clem), Randal Hendricks, James & Karen Stone, and
Albert Fried of New York.
Other notable milestones in Bill's career included back to back wins
in one day at Churchill Downs in the spring of 1996, then another win with
his next starter a week later. Then there was the gritty router DIGNIFY
who Bill trained to FOUR WINS IN A ROW in the fall of 1997.
