Kelly’s Landing takes Aristides in track-record time

Kelly’s Landing lowered the track record while winning the $162,450 Aristides Breeders’ Cup Handicap (G3) by 1 3/4 lengths on Saturday at Churchill Downs.

Racing two and three wide, jockey Gary Stevens moved the four-year-old son of Patton closer to the rail and took the lead in the turn, commanding by 1 1/2 lengths at the top of the stretch on the way to the clear win.

"He broke real relaxed and was able to stay in striking distance without me using him," said Stevens, who was riding Kelly's Landing for the first time. "He just took me around the turn at his will."

Grade 2 winner Battle Won, favored at 6-to-5, pressed the pace throughout and finished second, 1 1/4 lengths in front of Jet Prospector. Time for the six-furlong contest for three-year-olds and older was 1:07.59, a track record at the distance. The previous record of 1:07.77 was set by Kona Gold during his victory in the 2000 Breeders' Cup Sprint (G1).

"Gary Stevens was very impressed [with the track record] because Churchill Downs is a place where you don't break track records very often," said winning trainer Eddie Kenneally. "A lot of these records have been existing for a long time. It's very seldom that we see someone break a record here."

Unraced at two, Summerplace Farm homebred Kelly's Landing has five wins in nine starts. The gelding has earned $220,560.

Kelly's Landing is out of the Great Above mare Best Game.
